TO BEAGLE OR NOT TO BEAGLE

Beagles are no more for everyone then a Golden Retriever or Pekingese. That is why there are over 150 breeds recognized by AKC and more being added regularly. Our goal is place our pets in loving, happy homes that will last a lifetime of 12 or more years. Please take a few moments to read on.

Beagles have been bred for hunting small game, mostly rabbit and hare, on foot, all day long for hundreds of years in packs. Today they still retain many of those hunting instincts. Here are some thoughts to see if a Beagle maybe right for you.

Beagles make wonderful family dogs. They do well with children, the elderly and other dogs and cats if raised with them. They love just about everyone and every thing so don’t expect them to be a good guard dog. They will bark to let you know that there is something going on.

Beagles require securely fenced yards. Gates and doors left open are an invitation for them to go exploring. They will always have to walk on a leash or they will take off after anything that catches their attention.

Beagles do not do well in apartments. They have places to go and things to do.

Beagles are not stubborn. They are very intelligent but at the same time independent thinkers much like cats. They have to analyze why they should do something for you. They can do obedience, agility, tracking, therapy and the list goes on and on.

Beagles require time. You need have time to devote to them on a daily basis, not just toss them some food. The younger the Beagle the more time you need to spend with them. If they are left alone to become lonely or bored they will find something to do. It maybe digging, barking, chewing up anything and everything or a combination of these.

Beagles do not need a lot of grooming. They shed small amounts continually. A good brushing and toe nail trim a couple times a month with an occasional bath.

Beagles love to eat. It is easy to over feed them and can cause serious health issues.

There are always exceptions to the rules.

Now that you are ready to start looking for your life long companion a few more comments and thoughts.

BUYERS BEWARE:

Not all Beagles are created equal. There are a lot of choices out there. If you are looking for something out of show lines then read the Beagle breed standard (AKC Breed Standard). Then look for letters (CH, BIS, BISS) ahead of the names in the pedigrees in the first 2 generations. You need to decide a head of time what you are looking for, don’t compromise and don’t impulse buy. Ask lots of questions of the breeder. If they don’t answer, avoid or change the subject this is not the person to get your Beagle from. Get everything in writing. You will probably have to be patient to find the right Beagle.

What you pay for the Beagle does not guarantee quality, temperament or health. NEITHER DOES AKC or any other registry. Registries only guarantee that Beagle A was bred to Beagle B to produce litter C.

Nearly everyone wants that cute 5 week old female 13” female puppy. Puppies shouldn’t be weaned until they are 5 weeks and vaccinated at 6 weeks. The vaccine isn’t effective for a week to 10 days. Even if a show kennel knows one of the puppies will be placed in a pet home they normally don’t let the puppy leave until 9-10 weeks.

No one can guarantee size of a puppy; they can only make a guess.

In Beagles the neutered males make much better pets then females. They are more people oriented and affectionate. If neutered before they start marking they rarely do.

Please don’t disregard the slightly older puppy or the retired show dog. These Beagles are not throw aways. They have been brought up with the best care and love, often in homes, sleeping on beds. They are placed in pet homes where they can be the center of attention, loved for a lifetime, because that is what is best for the Beagle, not the breeder. There are great advantages to them. You will know better the personality and size. They will have been completely vaccinated and more likely spayed or neutered already.

We are show breeders and do not always have puppies available. Our goal is to make sure the Beagles placed in pet homes are for the life of the dog. We are more then happy to refer you to other reputable breeders.

Our dogs are raised in our home and socialized from the beginning. They’re bred not for just the show ring but for temperament.

All our pet Beagles are sold on “limited” registry and a spay/neuter contract (read our sample contract). We have a 72-hour grace period, guarantee against genetic defects and if for any reason you can no longer keep the dog we will take it back at any point in time.
